KL LRT is implementing a full ticketing integration of the RapidKL Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line on Nov 28 2011 as announced by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana), the operator of Klang Valley‘s two LRT lines.

New Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) integrated ticketing system

The new Automatic Fare Collection Ticketing System, which cost RM115.2 million, comprises new sets of automatic gates, ticket vending machines, passenger service machines, mobile validators, station computer system; central computer system; initialisation machines and personalisation machines.

INDRA-IRIS AFC Consortium (IIAC), who have been contracted to design, manufacture, deliver, install and test the new system, would also be responsible in implementing the online ticket purchase.

The new system uses a new MyRapid Pass and tokens for single journeys. Now KL LRT commuters would have the convenience of using a single ticket for the entire journey when using the 2 Kl LRT System of Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line.

The next phase would involve integration of the ticketing system of KL Monorail with AFC by March 2012.
The whole system would cover the RapidKL bus services in the second quarter of 2012.

The current ridership for the three RapidKL LRT Systems is 420,000 daily. By next year, the ridership is expected to reach 500,000 daily.

RapidKL has offered a special promotion MyRapid Card of RM10 each, which carries a stored value of RM8.

Commuters with the current Stored Value Card can also change them to the new MyRapid Ticket (SVT) without any charges.

The Touch ‘n Go cards can also be used under the new AFC integrated ticketing system.

On average, some 56 per cent of the commuters purchased single journey tickets. Thus, under the AFC system, commuters will be given a token for single journeys instead of a magnetic ticket.

The KL LRT commuters would need to touch the token at the gates on entry and drop the token upon exit.

In cases of over-ride, the machine will reject the tokens and the LRT commuters would need to go to the LRT counter to add more value to cover their actual journey. Tickets can be purchases at the LRT counters or at the Ticket Vending Machines (TVM).

The new KL LRT ticketing system would also allow customers to purchase and reload their tickets online in the future via the official website.

KL LRT ticketing woes of Kuala Lumpur commuters in busy LRT stations like KLCC LRT station and Masjid Jamek LRT station are really getting on their nerves daily. On Nov 28 2011, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) implements their new integrated ticketing system and there are new teething problems in transition to the new system.

With the ticketing system using a new MyRapid Pass and tokens for single journeys, KL LRT commuters will now have the comfort of using a single ticket for the entire trip even if they have to change to other Kl LRT lines.

With the new ticketing system, commuters would not need to exit from one Masjid Jamek station to another but proceed to the other line to continue their journey. Masjid Jamek station has interchanges with the Kelana Jaya Line and the Ampang Line of the Kuala Lumpur Light Rail Transit sytem.

The daily scenes of traffic gridlock and seething KL LRT ticket lines beneath the glittering Petronas Twin Towers reflect a lack of planning and investment in urban mobility that is hampering the capital’s goal of becoming a world-class city by 2020.

The long lines just to buy a ticket to board a train at the KLCC LRT station.

Massive lines for tickets fill up the lobby of the light rail transit (LRT) station every evening, forcing people to jostle and push in order to squeeze their way while nightmarish traffic jams not only mean damaging losses in productivity but are even forcing tourists to abandon their taxi cabs.

The capital’s LRT system has been in place since the late 1990s but has been widely panned for lack of interchanges and strategic destinations along its alignment.

The daily congestion in the KLCC station lobby also reflects the poor planning that went into the design.

Some transport experts also pointed out that the city had chronically underinvested in rail transit especially when compared to cities like Singapore and Shanghai which have spent billions laying out new train lines every few years while KL’s system stagnated and lagged behind.

Shanghai, which started putting in its rail system about the same time as KL, now boasts a network that is among the largest in the world.

It also took more than a decade for the authorities to finally fix the much maligned Masjid Jamek interchange to allow seamless connections as well as implement a single ticketing system for the various LRT lines, which visitors and locals alike have pointed out should have been common sense and done from the start as is the case in other countries.

Commuters jostle past the long lines for tickets.

Long waiting times as much as nearly half an hour just to buy a ticket are still plaguing commuters at the KLCC LRT station.

“Of course I am upset,” one commuter told The Malaysian Insider yesterday evening as her line inched forward. Nearby was a new ticket machine that had broken down.

Calvin, a banker who works near KLCC, said that massive lines were common.

“This is quite normal especially at this time (7pm),” he said as he surveyed the jostling crowd.

Another commuter, Zakri, said he had waited in line for about 20 minutes just to buy a ticket.

One couple visiting from the UK said that while there were long lines to board trains in London during rush hour, such lines didn’t exist just to buy tickets.

“It is disappointing,” said the husband as their line crept forward.

They said that they had originally boarded a Kuala Lumpur taxi but their taxi driver told them to take the train instead after they got caught in traffic gridlock around KLCC, which is the city’s premier business address.

Zakri waited in line for about 20 minutes just to buy a ticket.

A representative from Prasarana told The Malaysian Insider, when contacted, that commuters should purchase and use the newly introduced stored value cards instead as it will allow them to pass the barrier gates without having to line up for tickets.

She added that it will take time for the public to get used to the idea of using stored value cards instead of single journey tickets.

The government has also embarked on putting in a new higher capacity mass transit system called MyMRT and the first phase is expected to open by 2017 with future phases expected to include a circle line.

Improvements could also be felt in the KL Monorail LRT system when new four-coach trains were introduced, allowing for higher frequencies and less crowded trains.

It also brought in experts who helped build train lines in London and Singapore as well as started a new Land Public Transport Commission to better co-ordinate the development of public transport.

The daily woes experienced by the city’s commuters however mean that many are worried the MyMRT might also under-deliver and they will still face unnecessary hassles in their commute come 2020.

Kl Monorail will get 12 new sets of four-car trains to replace the current two-car trains. The train service is currently operating at 35% over capacity and this will definitely improve the overcrowding problem that Kuala Lumpur Monorail are facing currently.

It is estimated that the KL Monorail line will operate at 85% over capacity within the next few years, hence,the Government has confirmed to double its capacity within two years with the new four-car monorail fleet.

Scomi Rail Berhad is the supplier for the KL Monorail fleet expansion project which cost RM494 million.

The expansion will increase the capacity of the current KL Monorail line to 6,400 passengers per hour per direction with the new four-car monorail trains.

All the 11 Kuala Lumpur Monorail stations will be upgraded subsequently to cater for the new length of the four-car trains and to cope with the substantial increase in ridership in Kuala Lumpur.

Express Rail Link (ERL) provides high-speed train service between KL Sentral and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) through the KLIA Express and KLIA Transit services.

ERL is confident that the ridership of the KLIA Express and KLIA Transit will improve further by October next year. The rail link service will be extended to the new low-cost carrier terminal (KLIA2) by the completion of the 2.2 kilometer link.

The ridership between January and October rose 16 per cent to about 13,095 passengers compared with 11,621 passengers who travelled onboard the trains in the same period last year.

The new KLIA2 link is now 14.2 per cent complete. Once completed, passengers can depart the ERL main terminal from KLIA and arrive at KLIA2 within three minutes.

ERL had invested RM1.1 million to improve customers’ experience which included enhancement of fare collections system, e-ticketing system, free Wi-Fi connectivity and interior refurbishment of 12 KLIA Express trains.
